In the United States, kombucha and other fermented beverages are fast becoming a favorite, not only for their unique tastes, effervescence and flavoring versatility, but for their pro-biotic qualities and health benefits. People from all over the world claim improved digestion, inflammation and immune system strength from these natural, delicious live drinks. Lucky for us, we can skip paying four bucks a bottle and learn how to inexpensively and easily make them ourselves!
This class will go though the entire process of using and caring for two types of SCOBYs (Symbiotic Communities Of Bacteria and Yeast): a kombucha "mushroom" and water kefir "grains." Students will have the opportunity to see and sample both brews in different stages of the fermentation process. All will be able to participate in preparation of tea. Additionally, the class will go over various natural flavoring techniques and simple carbonation.
The workshop will also feature a discussion of related fermented tonic drinks and their starters and processes.
Students will go home with a kit enabling them to begin their own kombucha brewing at home! Kit includes: vessel, tea base, starter tea, cloth and one organic kombucha SCOBY.
